Hi there. I'm Al Kemist. All-around Geek. But, I have a passion for food. Let me tell you a little bit about myself.
I grew up watching cooking shows on PBS. Yan Can Cook and The Frugal Gourmet
to name a few. But, nothing I made ever turned out like the shows. They
always assumed that the viewer had a more than basic understanding of
the kitchen. But, I was a kid. I could boil water and make Mac &
Cheese. But when I tried to replicate some of my favorite foods, they
just turned out...wrong.
I managed to make edible food throughout
my adult life. But It was more of an eat to live and not so much
actually enjoying food. All this changed the day I was blinded with
science.
One day, back in 2001 I'm watching the Food Network. Some guy, who looks like Thomas Dolby's twin, is going on about cooking duck while parodying Monthy Python's witch skit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This guy is a geek. He speaks my language. He gets me. And all of a sudden, food makes sense. It's no longer magic but chemistry and physics. It's science!! And that was the end for me.
Much
has changed since that fateful episode. I've learned how to play with
my food. To tinker. To tweak. And, because of Alton Brown, I've learned
to not just how to cook food, but how to enjoy cooking.
And there you have it.
